Meet Dr. Elizabeth R. Vaughan - Founder of Natural Vitality Center

A Legacy in Medicine

Dr. Elizabeth R. Vaughan is a fourth-generation physician with a legacy rooted deeply in the medical field. Her great-grandfather, Dr. Victor C. Vaughan, was a pioneering figure who championed the admission of women into the School of Medicine at the University of Michigan and worked with Dr. Walter Reed on Yellow Fever research. Continuing this tradition, her grandfather, Dr. Warren Taylor Vaughan, authored the first textbook on allergies in the Western Hemisphere, laying a foundation for modern environmental medicine. This legacy has been an inspiration for Dr. Vaughan’s commitment to advancing integrative and holistic approaches to health.

Her maternal great grandfather, Junius Kenward Shaw MD was a country doctor who travelled to homes in New Iberia, Louisiana to provide care. He had a soap dish on his carriage to wash his hands between patients.

Her parents were both physicians who practiced in Richmond, Virginia. David, her father, was an allergist like his father. Elizabeth, his wife, was a nephrologist who cared for veterans at the VA who were paralyzed. Both died of cancer in later years, but Dr. Vaughan, their daughter was able to use integrative medicine to ease their passing.

A Journey from Emergency Medicine to Holistic Healing

Dr. Vaughan attended college at Duke graduating with Distinction in Chemistry in 1974, then medical school at the University of Virginia.  She has been a licensed physician since 1979. She served her residency in Internal Medicine in Kalamazoo, Michigan. After that she began her career in Emergency Medicine, serving in Virginia and North Carolina in 1982.  In 1991, she founded the first urgent care ambulatory practice in Martinsville, VA, which later grew into a holistic medical practice. Seeking to provide an even broader spectrum of care, Dr. Vaughan relocated her practice to Greensboro, NC, in 2002, where she expanded her focus to include integrative and functional medicine.

After navigating a personal health challenge due to mold exposure in her office in 2017 and 2018, she semi-retired while she recovered from Mold Dementia. Once she regained her health, Dr. Vaughan restructured the Natural Vitality Center to operate as a mail-order supplement provider. Then she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She chose to have surgery but declined chemo and radiation.  Now, 6 ½ years later, her surgeon said, “You did not need either of them.”

Once she recovered, she returned to her virtual practice; she remains the consulting physician and visionary behind Natural Vitality Center
